Gillian was born and grew up in Nottingham. She studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama for four years, and then undertook postgraduate study with leading soloist Margaret Major. Gillian went in to teach at High Wycombe Music Centre specialising on viola. Freelance playing has included the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the English Sinfonia. She also performs now with a number of local music societies and orchestras.
Gillian currently teaches for Surrey Arts working with children of all ages. She also teaches viola and violin at Charterhouse School in Godalming. She is a member of the Salieri String Quartet, who perform regularly in concert and for a variety of social and other events. Gillian has one son, who is a former member of the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, and twin daughters, both of whom are professional musicians.
